Start where you Are – Book Review
Reading time: 2 – 2 minutes
Just got finished
d reading this book and besides his personal stories I give it a alright to read grading. I didn’t really feel anything new was coming at me in the book. It was good to read the story of a cat who really went from the bottom to the top and took his chances. I think the first book the Pursuit of Happyness and the Will Smith movie is probably that story. This book was more categorizing the methods at which the cat got to where he is. It’s a looking back kind of thing and really pulling what worked.
Of course with all of these books there is a formula with a 5-C’s or some other way to remember 5 words that start with C. Before you say Freeman pretty much shitted on this book let me tell you if it was the first book I read of this kind I would’ve loved it. But, it never ceases to amaze me how cats who grew up completely different keep cranking out the same way to deliver information. I really think the editors and the like have a rags to riches format that they put the books and as such they all end up sounding the same. It’s like they are teaching you a school lecture with personal stories.
Either way enjoy when you can as you can only master something when you read enough to everyone seems to repeat themselves. Now I’m at book number 1000 so all of them sound the same but are you?

The pursuit of happyness wat that story. Its not going to be easy but get out there and do something with your life becuaes no one is going to help you. If anything they will watch you suffer and tell you to stop complaining. Especiallhy if they came from it and made it.
I feel you..I wish he’d just come raw and say that he didn’t give a fvck, snapped, and was ruthless as hell. The movie wasn’t enough for me. I’m getting tired of the pretty entrepreneur stories too. Especially Black folks. How do you have “rags to riches” without the real “rags to riches” story?
@Anubis – Well that story was the ground up hustle that makes everyone feel good… that’s why they made the movie. But, what about the bad days the shit the majority of us go through. I know that story doesn’t make sense to the masses but it’s that building block most of us really want.
@AH – They Hollywood it up so they set up a hero. I’m sure if you sat next to that cat he’ll say life was fvcked up here and there. He might be happy he made it but he surely wasn’t happy to go through it. I think the Editors and publishing houses sugar that shit up so it looks like the brother was happy being poor. Like he always was so positive even in the dark times. Everyone needs a hero homie but for those of us trying to get out fvck all those Captain America stories.
Now in this book he is pretty raw here and there but it ain’t the RAW shit I really want to hear. When you have other fvckers in your mix telling you how you should tell your story you’ll make some shit that sounds like you didn’t live it.
Not another nightingale-convent convert. “The of C’s of blah blah…” what is this, an SBA meeting?! Liked the movie and first book, but c’mon…hit us with the real grind!
The first book was his life story the second book is him saying I can make another million and let me explain game. The raw is the hit. It’s like any rappers first album with no cosign. That shit puts them on the map and all the other shit that comes after that goes into some now I’m a baller let me tell you about my G5. But, some cats know how to stay in that pocket.
This book was a good building block. I enjoyed it but I guess I was expecting some more raw information and ended up getting a lecture. I know it sounds like I’m giving it a bad review but it was a great tutorial that if you had a pen and pad a cat could build on it.
Yeah, I know what you mean.. I read it to and it’s got good info in it but for me, I don’t like reading motivational books. Meaning books that books that tell you “you can do anything, just believe” type of stuff. I just want the steps that it takes to get there, what to do and how you did it. It’s not a bad book, it just sounds like Think and Grow Rich. That’s probably why I like “grinding it out” by ray Kroch.
It sounds different. More like an old dude telling you “Bad in my day” stories but with solid info.
To me it sounds like his publisher said we can have another pay day if you would write another book. When cats who really came from nothing make it there aren’t these 5C’s angles that they are thinking about on the road to riches. It’s really a Read & React kind of method and they learn as they go. Now I’m sure as you get older you could quantify it in a more intelligent manner but really the motivation was I’m on the street and I got to do something about it.
A lot of these books don’t provide any real steps. What if the cat would’ve said this is how I got in the Stock Brokerage game from how hard I studied to my angle on getting clients. Then this book would become something a cat could build on. I’m sure he has that story too but will he ever tell it? Like I said in the Inspiration podcast what can we build on when cats are motivating you with the prayer shit angle? You got to believe, you got to dig deep, you got to sacrifice, you got to pray and you got to be lucky???? OK now where’s the fvcking money in all that hoopla shit.
It’s a great book for a more organized mind but for those who are really trying to make it there’s nothing to build on.
