Locksmith – Recession Proof

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

A locksmith is someone who designs and fits together locks and keys. The earliest practice of security engineering was locksmithing, and the earliest practice of security infiltration was lock picking. Locksmiths can also re-key existing locks, which involves removing pin tumblers in an existing lock and replacing it with different tumblers

  1. Enroll in a training program. The Associated Locksmiths of America offers more than 100 classes to assist those who desire to become locksmiths and achieve certification. A few of the locksmith classes cover identifying duplicate keys, safety codes, shop operations and pin and disc cylinders. There are more classes-these are just samples.
  2. Take and pass a locksmithing certification test. You can attend courses to prepare you for the certification test, and even find online locksmith certification testing.
  3. Apply for jobs with security companies as a service technician, building maintenance personnel, or a locksmith can set up their own shop. Locksmiths work for companies such as casinos and not just in Las Vegas. Casinos seem to be everywhere-American Indian reservations, the Colorado Rocky Mountains, as well as the Louisiana Bayou.

I think anyone with a little bit of hustle could really make a decent living off of this. Most of your locksmiths are local in nature and are listed in the phone book (if anyone still uses that). I think if anyone made a name for themselves and really marketed the company they would be busy. Make cards in the shape of keys and flyers in the shape of keys and put them on cars and in mailboxes. Make a refrigerator magnet that says “If you can read this most likely you are in your house BUT you’ll wish you had my number when you can’t.”

Be more than a locksmith and lean towards helping people with home security. It’s one thing to open the door it’s a whole other thing to give people a Safe Lock package and outfit their house to be pretty much break in proof by the type of locks and devices they use. Everyone opens up locks but few actually have a package to secure a house from top to bottom. Sell the SafeLock Package!

I’ve been with you a while now and I don’t know where you get all these ideas from but THANK YOU! You actually make it hard not to hustle.

Are you still going to be a Bengal next year? J/K

I appreciate the compliment as I am just walking around seeing who is still making money and making sure I put the survivors up on the R&G. Hopefully the recession will end sooner than later so it could just be a change in skillset moving forward.
