Honesty is a Policy but it Ain’t the Best
Reading time: 3 – 4 minutes
Honesty overall is a great way to proceed when in business but it’s a lie to say it’s the best. Most people who you interact with over money really can’t take Honesty and so most of the time being quiet is probably better. It is rare to meet someone who can take criticism and it is even more rare to meet someone who will tell you the truth. People love to throw this saying out there like when you really are in a tight situation you are going to just get up and put your hand on the bible. Real talk most of the time it’s better to just shut the hell up and get to know the person better so you can deliver the truth in a format that they can receive.
I wrote this post because being Honest is painful. Painful for you to tell people and painful for people to receive it. You’ll find out how painful it truly is when you have to fire someone and they have no idea why. You’ll find out how hard it is when you finally run across the cat who is trying to get things done and you messing up isn’t all that funny. You’ll find out how hard it is when you lose money and instead of trying to find blame in others you’ll admit that it’s your fault and lose a customer. You’ll find out when money is tight and things you promise to others can’t be kept. All of this happens in the normal running of a business and you’ll see how hard it truthfully is to be Honest.
Now I’m not advocating lying but the person who can remain Honest and forthright will be the needle in the haystack. Sometimes you run across some really religious cats who you know value Honesty in a GOD might strike me down way. Sometimes you run across a cat who seen enough wrong crap happen that they’d rather just tell you the truth (Freeman). Most of the time you’ll have to weigh how valuable or necessary telling the truth is when conducting business. The guy’s breath smelling like goat’s ass might not be something you want to bring up as it’s not relevant to the business deal but you saying you don’t want to take money under the table is.
In summary Honesty in business is a situational thing. That’s why my solution is just shutting the hell up and trying to get all your business deals done ASAP. See the Chip$ in the game are pure and only the idiots executing the Hustles are flawed. Their flaws whether that be with wine, women or song can come back to haunt you in many ways. I usually go by the rule of thumb of this is business and I don’t even want to know what you ate for lunch. I know that’s cold but in the longrun I have been able to keep my hands clean and not offend my customers by trying to be Honest in all situations.
Extra: Minding your own and shutting up is probably the best policy when it comes to business.
