Career or Job
Reading time: 4 – 6 minutes
What’s the difference? A job is: A regular activity performed in exchange for payment, A position in which one is currently employed. A career is: A chosen pursuit; a profession or occupation. The general course or progression of one’s working life or one’s professional achievements over time. Bottom line: your job is what you are doing today. Your career is what you’ve done over the past years and what you plan to do in the future. So when you think “career”, you have to think long-term. And when you think long-term, you begin to realize the following:
- Everything you do counts
- Everything you do needs to have a good reason behind it
- You have to make good decisions
- Always think “What’s my next step?”
- What you do today determines your tomorrow
- Mistakes can potentially haunt you for a long time
You should pay serious attention to this “career” thing. Your job feeds you and your family today. Your career will feed you and your family tomorrow and beyond.
OH NO Brother I didn’t just make all that crap up I cut and paste that to this post. I don’t know if you are translating the myth and how it’s essentially the same thing. Let me tell you what I see. A Job is where you work for someone but you realize it’s just that a damn job while a Career is someone working for someone else but saying they have a long term plan to become a bigger asset while working under someone. My favorite part is the last line of your career will feed you and your family tomorrow and beyond! Everytime I see that Everest and that propaganda saying get out of your job and get a career. This is a another myth I have to expose as people actually believe french fries are not potatoes.
Look whether you decide to make money as a Plumbing Associate or a Chief Roto-Rooter plumber you still are working for someone else! It’s not like saying I am a professional makes any damn difference in the whole scheme of things. This is just another ploy to get you to be happy with a dumbass title while making the same money. This time instead of you clocking out and going home when the job is done you will now memorize the Roto-Rooter manual and become a professional plumber. Someone made these names up to get the book readers to feel good about themselves. It’s the same CON as when they switched everyone’s name from a employee to associate. Now instead of being a Burger Flipping employee you are a Burger Flipping associate!
There’s no difference at all and anyone who believes this or backs it up is a damn fool. It’s as stupid as someone saying they work on computers or they went to school for computers. Overall you creating a business is the best thing you can do for your family and your future. You coming up with a way to make money without worrying about hiring, firing, being Black, Glass ceilings and people liking you is the best thing you can do with your productive time. You staying someplace and getting all educated to be of service to someone else for the rest of your life is fool’s gold. How many people had a career before this recession? Do you think the owner who was firing them so OH Pete you have a Job but Ted he has a career? Only a dummy spends any time going around and telling someone they have a career.
Just say, Man I work here because that’s all you’re doing! I know I know some of you cats are going to get on here saying I have a career. I know some of you cats are quietly reading thinking FreeMan thinks if you don’t run a business you don’t run sh*t! Nope I’m not that far on that angle but I do want you to stop trying to make everyone believe that CON. Be smart about it and play the game but don’t sell the game to someone else unless you happen to be the BOSS telling this to a dummy. Beyond that keep working to build something of your own otherwise you’re working to live and then die.

Another hit the nail on the head! I agree with what this article is saying. A job and Career are one of the same in that in the end someone else has the final say and not you. If they need to fire you or lay you off guess what out to the street you go! To me the only way i see someone man/woman to be in control is if they have their own business where they can make decisions. Anyone can be a doctor or lawyer but if you are working for someone else that person has final say on your future. Now if the doctor or lawyer owned their own respective businesses they would be able to make their own decisions and not be a cubicle slave.
I always like the way they use different words to make the employee feel somehow the scenario is different. Like you said no matter what you call it you are still working for someone else. It reminds me of the Titles & Hate Podcast where people feel these things actually change their status.
People just have to realize that if you can call your job a career that means you probably have gained enough expertise to do it on your own. So you can replace Job or Career with OWNER!
Another homerun post Freeman! I was just having this discussion with a friend of mine the other day. You’ve opened my mind up to an abundance of different angles in the game since I discovered your website. Keep ridin hard on these suckas!
We got to get our mind right if we want to get our grind right. Nothing wrong with working for someone on the way to building your own but let’s not get caught up in the myth of saying french fries aren’t potatoes.
Glad to be of service bruh! I don’t mean to call them suckas to the game but we know they ain’t thinking and saying or doing the right thing.
Cats have been programmed to get out of college and get a good job. Then when they think about growing they believe the CON of thinking it’s now a career. It’s all a little kids game of saying they have a gold star on their head it’s all BS glue and glitter.
The young cat will learn his lesson when he finds out all the BS politics he has to go through when he could make the same money out on the street selling bottled water. Like I always say Cats don’t want money they want a title and they want fame. Most are just not able to articulate that truth!
Whut up Freeman, yo Cza, i’d take 2-3 of the eager-beaver type of employee anyday for my startup. Depending on the nature of the business, I’m thinking he would be a windfall for anyone who owns or aspires to run his/her own business. Who better else to operate our workforce than that type of guy?! Someone has to do it, i’d place my chips on his number. Yeah, he’d be in the electronic Rolodex along with all the others, without question.
Freeman you hit the nail on the head with one.@Cza I have coworker’s who thinks the same way but have been at this company half of their life still thinking they are growing with the company.
