Flyer Distribution – Start Up

Reading time: 2 – 4 minutes

Small businesses depend on putting flyers on people’s doors. There is a whole syndicate of cats hired to just walk around while you are at work putting a BS flyer with rubber-band on your door. Most small businesses will have flyers of specials that they keep near the door that they would love to have distributed in the surrounding neighborhood. Also, some flyer companies will make flyers for their customers. Here’s a basic set up for you flyer distribution company but keep in mind you will have to tweek it to make it fit your market…

  1. Talk to businesses in your area. Ask if they would like to get their menus, coupons or promotional items hand delivered to area residents. The top 3 types of businesses are Pizza, Oil Change and Fitness Centers. Other great businesses are Landscapers, Lawn Maintenance, Painters and Handyman Services.
  2. Map out a delivery area and show this to your potential clients. I HIGHLY recommend delivering to single family homes ONLY, to start. You can grow the home count later, but I suggest starting with 1000-2000 homes.
  3. Order plastic bags with a hole cut out in the middle near the top. You can order these online. I use a 9″ x 14″ clear plastic bag.
    • To start you will want to have between 3-5 clients. I would charge the clients between .07 and .10 per piece. So, if you start with 1000 homes, then you would charge each customer between $70.00 and $100.00. Once you have their material, you will have to stuff one of each flyer in the bag. This is a little time consuming, but well worth the effort.
  4. Deliver the bags. College and High School students are good workers, along with moms who are looking for some extra cash. You’ll need to decide how much to pay your workers, I pay mine $8.00 an hour. I would try to get 2-3 workers to distribute with you.
  5. Walk door to door in the neighborhoods that you mapped out and place the bags on the front door of the house.
  6. Here are KEY Selling points when talking to potential clients.
  7. 1. This is an alternative to them doing their own direct mail campaign.
    2. I put it in a plastic bag so if it does blow off the door, the material is still secure.
    3. How many times does a company leave a flyer on the mailbox ( Which by the way is illegal ) only to have it blow through the neighborhood, creating a mess on the streets.

This is simple too as I can get menus from places or coupon sheets and just put them in the bag. If you add up all the hustles you have listed on here I think anyone can make more than enough to live. Recession or Not.

Even if there is the internet, huge electronic billboards and magazines, nothing will beat the efficiency of leaflets or flyers. it has been considered as a standard promotional mechanism by companies.

@Anon – Yeah if you aren’t greedy a lot of places have menus and flyers of their own so you can easily take those for them. It might be a good thing to get hooked up with a flyer maker so you can offer that service too.

@LD – Well you can’t beat that they have to take it off of the door. I can delete emails and I can ignore billboards but those flyers become irritating because I have to get them off of my door.

I don’t plan on being greedy but why make flyers when I can distribute the stuff they have in the back? I like your site because you are talking things everyone can do not like other places where they want you to learn something really hard.

    Thanks for making it plain!

Yeah if the game is simple why not execute it the simple way. No arguments from me on that point.

Thanks but that’s the goal. Keep everything simple so we can do something about it instead of getting you to learn a whole new way of life.

What you have and what you know right now is more than enough!

another thing is passing out flyers at busy intersections or events. cats can free advertise their service in craigslist to distribute flyers around the taste of chicago or essence music festival. someone like me with a blog would pay someone to promote my ish at these spots.

the hustle game aint hard or complex it just cats like to make it complex to justify their fear of going out and getting it.

I agree with you Ed because if a cat came up and said for 100 bucks I’ll pass out 1000 flyers quick math would say that’s 10 cents a pop and sure why not.

Like you said for events or just in certain neighborhoods or after clubs or anywhere. People don’t want to sweat to make money as they’d rather spend all day coming up with something that needs thousands to start instead of what they got plenty of and that’s their own Hustle.
