Wills to Wilt
Reading time: 3 – 5 minutes
There will be times when you run into other people who are doing their thing. They have their own business and they are comfortable in who they are to volunteer their opinion on things. When this occurs it will be a test of Wills and you have to decide if you are going to volunteer your own or Wilt away. See it’s not the kind of conversation you get into with cats if you can not take criticism of your points. In reality just like you they are analyzing the model for business you propose and bouncing it off of what they know. Now a lot of people who are too caught up in what they are doing usually wilt away or get so pissed off that they think there’s nothing to gain. The truth of the matter is there’s always something to gain when you are sitting amongst people who have their own. You just have to be able to take it as you sling it.
Everyone who starts a business is kind of obsessed with it. It’s like their baby and when you talk about their baby being lucky to live they get pissed off. Usually the younger you are in this game the less you can take criticism. Hey it happened to me and I’ve fired Accountants over merely suggesting that I need to hustle harder. Now that I am a bit older, I still would fire his ass, but I see where he was coming from. I get a lot of advice from older cats now who put me on to new angles and new ways of thinking that can only come from them living and profiting from it. Now I’m not going out seeking the company of these cats like I’m networking but since I have been running a business for a while you naturally create friends. I am actively engaged in reading and finding new avenues where the conversation about money is going on if only to be a fly on the wall to absorb game.
See as you get older it’s just a argument based on their own personal theory. No one is right about their angle when it comes to money it’s just their angle. It’s what worked for them and they want to take your ice cream company and put it through their processes to see if it really works. These conversations are very beneficial if you can hold your ground and play the game without getting mad that you can’t seem to make one shot. It’s about being on the court when this conversation comes about not necessarily winning the game. A lot of cats sit there quietly absorbing thinking they have nothing to offer or they fear sounding stupid. I used to be like that until I figured out if we are just shooting the ish on business then I should throw in my groundlevel hustle and see where it takes me. Most of the time some cat will tell me what’s the next think I have to worry about but most cats will listen because they are removed from the day to day grind. Truth be told they miss the time when it was all about them and not about the marketing team or fulfillment.
So when you happen to be in one of these conversations don’t be scared to speak up. Don’t get mad either because the reason they can speak so freely is because they have their own. You just haven’t learned to be confident and say your piece as you have your own too. No one in that room can really cause harm to anyone else so the ideas and criticism can flow freely. Consider it that you are sitting around people with guns! Everyone can speak because everyone knows that the other guy is packing too. It’s basically a opportunity for you to learn and debate cats who have built it not those networking cats who hope and pray for it. It’s just a battle of Wills so don’t Wilt under the pressure!

Real talk, the only thing stupid in business is being silent and not asking questions while cats are around us making money and doing what you really want to be doing – do for self.
I think we got a lot of broke people with egos and pride and that is something I saw growing up to this day. I still got cats in their 30s and 40s back in the hood who sit up there and gleam with pride talking about they above doing this or doing that and then their momma call up the stairs and say “dinner ready”….
And that old ass man is asking me to join him for dinner his momma made in her house..this is real talk!
People know they are at a lost in real time application. Most of them are gun shy because they have been bouncing their great idea off of people who won’t even try. Then they come up with all kinds of ghost stories worrying about people stealing their ideas when they don’t know one person in reality who had their idea taken.
As a result they become silent and get intimidated by inanimate objects like suits and conference rooms. So I can’t fault them as I believed in those ghosts too when I started.
The thing to remember is to actively engage in conversations about money. Related to your hustle or not you will see new patterns of how to make money. Marketing is marketing no matter the product they go through a similar wind up. People just have to learn to get free criticism of their points and see it as a plus.
@Freeman That’s true.
@Ed Youre right so many broke people sit all day with those ego’s still at home with their momma.smh
You have to ask questions, that’s the only way you learn anything. Develop a thick skin and be ready to accept feedback. Sometimes we’re afraid to speak up for fear of being considered incompetent. What makes you incompetent is not seeking more knowledge.
@Eman – Thanks!
@Trueman – What’s funny is people will say it in a crowd in front of Warren Buffet or on some TV show like Shark Tank. But, it’s a little intimidating to get information in small circles.
The more you grow the more these impromptu meetings pop up. So you can’t feel like you are honored to be around them as much as you saying what’s on your mind so you can get smart people responding to it.
