M J Effect

air-jordan-shoes-23-anniversaryM.J. Effect – Sometimes your Hustle is so big that you settle for all the grass someone can give you. At the same time you plow the land for them and they reap a bigger reward.

Every Hustle has a breakthrough moment where the Hustler finally makes real money. I mean building block money, where they can relax from surviving and think about thriving. When this happens the money is so lovely that it’s often wasted because of lack of discipline. This is usually where the Hustler falls into the the MJ Effect.

Michael Jordan had more people buying, stealing, killing for his shoes than any other person seen in history. So Nike calls up MJ and gives him a shoe contract worth millions. In the meantime NIKE turns from the number 5 shoe company in the world to number 1.  Now to the average sucker they’ll say MJ is paid he made a couple hundred million. To the Hustler we know he got 1 cent on the dollar. People were buying Jordan not Nike, if he would have signed with New Balance the same people would have bought those. He could’ve made his own shoes, ( he had the money from the Bball contract) and made all the money.

In the end NIKE is a billion dollar company while MJ is not even a billionaire.

Bottom Line: Don’t let the fact that money is coming in cloud your vision of what you should get from your Hustle.

true….i think he was still young when they came out with jordans so he didn’t know any better. i bet he’s kicking himself now.

this goes with your other post about talking money to money, right? i have to admit i was kinda lost on that one. now i get it ;~)

@keish, that’s true he was young when he started. But that’s no excuse, he should have figured it out by the time his career ended. There was even a model for it already. Back when Patrick Ewing started out, his sneakers were made by Adidas. They he moved to making his own. Obviously Jordan could have pulled that off.

Then again, everybody is not into all that thinking and trailblazing stuff (yes I am saying that with sarcasm and disgust for those sheep). Maybe that’s why Jordan never took any stance on “Black” issues. But that’s a whole other topic.

@keish – Well what is LeBron James or Kobe excuse now since we know about Jordan? Why haven’t they took their NBA money and come out with their own shoe and destroyed NIKE! Really its because these cats know how to make money but don’t know how to build. They aren’t thinking of forever money they are thinking about being popular and going to commercial shoots.

Yes, this is an example of the talk money post because whether they realize it or not NIKE came and took their hustle and made billions without shooting one shot!

@Carl – Jordan isn’t a idiot as he has made Brand Jordan with NIKE but the sad part is he didn’t fully capitalize on his own hustle. So now he joins teams with NIKE to con Dwanye Wade and Carmello Anthony so they don’t think about starting their own companies. Jordan got dicked and now he’s out to dick other people. The game is funny ain’t it?

I was just looking on forbes by accident and found out that MJ annually gets $45 million dollars, while Nike annually gets
$1 BILLION annually! And they report that MJ will hit the
$1 billion career earning mark in the next 4-5 years.

You are right that even though you make money, if you don’t know how to invest your money or KNOW YOUR VALUE you will get screwed!

All business is set up that way and it’s up to you to realize your value. Just because you are young doesn’t help when you help another person make a billion while you take 20 years to make that same billion. So MJ probably made Nike 1 billion Year 1 and here we are talking about MJ finally getting to a Billion 30 years later.

The kicker is Forbes said his EARNING MARK which means over time he has earned 1 billion but it doesn’t mean he has it. Now Nike makes 1 Billion annually so we know they got it, had it and still are going to make it. And we’re in a recession!

DO you think Nike understand the game and everybody else does’nt? Because they are straight up hustling athletes. There must be a clause in the contract that these athletes can’t leave or something for them tp keep getting conned like this for decades. It’s astonshing when look at the figures MJ is making less than 5% of the earnings from Jordans.

I had found a article about Tiger Woods and Nike is pimping him out too for like 4% Nike makes 800 million from the Woods line with Nike and he gets 30 million annually. Man, if I was that hot I would break from those cats all together and start my own business. I wonder why they don’t that is puzzling me because they must see the figures. Now I SEE why you advocate so hard for owning your own business. If you will get hustled/conned/screwed whatever name you want to call equals someone else getting filthy rich of you plain and simple!

Of course NIKE understands it and I’m sure they tell everyone they dump money into them behind sneaker development, commercials and overall PR. I’m sure the contracts are for a certain amount of time but they can leave after that. Kobe was originally on Adidas and now is on Nike.

They are happy to have someone give them a check. I think they believe they don’t have time to waste on worrying about clothing as they are golfers or bball players. To me it’s the same trap all talented people fall into whether that be painters, musicians or sports players and that is they are so focused on their talent that they get dicked out of their money. They think it’s beneath them to watch money so they get other people to manage it for them and then they end up with way less.

The Tiger and MJ issue to me is lets say they sign 1 contract. Why after that 1 contract don’t they start their own line after Nike already set up everything? Also, they don’t own their image or their logos so NIKE owns the logos too so they are conned all the way around.
